Description 

This 5-day course provides Indigenous leaders, Economic Development Corporation representatives, senior administrators, and Indigenous entrepreneurs with the practical skills to launch, structure, and operate a compliant, financially organized business within an Indigenous context for long-term success.  

You will learn to choose the right legal structure, set up governance and financial systems, manage compliance and risk, and create a practical launch plan. By the end of the course, you will leave with a business setup roadmap, operational checklists, and tools that support sound decision-making and long-term success. 

Daily Outcomes 

Day 1: Understand business entity options and select the best fit 
Day 2: Define ownership, board, and management responsibilities 
Day 3: Implement tax, accounting, and financial systems 
Day 4: Build operational, compliance, and risk management processes 
Day 5: Complete your launch plan with actionable next steps 

Program Outcomes 

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to: 

  1. Compare common legal structures used for Indigenous businesses, including sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, joint ventures, and Indigenous-owned entities. 
  2. Assess and select the most appropriate business structure based on ownership, governance, liability, operational goals, and economic development objectives. 
  3. Explain the roles and responsibilities of shareholders, boards, directors, officers, senior management in a Indigenous business.  
  4. Identify the core tax, accounting, bookkeeping, payroll, and financial reporting requirements needed to establish a compliant business operation. 
  5. Document operational, regulatory, and risk management requirements involved in moving from incorporation to active business operations.  
  6. Develop a practical startup checklist and implementation roadmap to support the launch, review, or ongoing management of a well-structured business venture. 

Certification  

To successfully complete the Indigenous Business Formation and Corporate Readiness course, you must meet all three requirements: 

  • Attendance: Attend at least 90% of all scheduled course sessions. 
  • Participation: Achieve at least 60% in course participation. 
  • Assignment: Achieve at least 60% on the course assignment. 

Prerequisites 

No formal prerequisites are required. This course is suitable for beginners and intermediate learners. Some familiarity with governance, finance, or administration is helpful.

  • General Delivery: Register for the general online delivery of our Indigenous Business Formation and Corporate Readiness course at the top of this page. Our general deliveries are held throughout the year. If no delivery is currently scheduled, register your interest and we will notify you when one is added. 
  • Indigenous entrepreneurs starting or strengthening their own business 
  • Indigenous leaders overseeing economic development projects 
  • Senior administrators and staff supporting Indigenous-owned business entities  
  • Economic Development Corporation representatives 

How do I attend? 

General Delivery: Register online for the general delivery of our Indigenous Business Formation and Corporate Readiness course. Our general deliveries are held throughout the year. 

Private Delivery: Your organization or community needs a minimum of 10 participants. Delivery is available in-person at your location or online. To book, complete the Discovery Form before your preferred start date. This gives us time to confirm instructor availability and prepare for your group.

Devin Gambler, MBA, is the Principal and Owner of ᐸᒥᐦᑖᐤ Pamihtâw Consulting Inc., an Indigenous advisory firm based in British Columbia that supports First Nations, Indigenous organizations, and businesses in the areas of governance, business planning, financial analysis, strategic development, and economic growth. He has more than 20 years of experience working in business and economic development, with a strong track record of helping clients establish sound business structures, evaluate opportunities, strengthen governance, and improve decision-making.  

Devin has advised on a wide range of projects involving First Nations economic development, business startup planning, corporate structuring, strategic planning, funding readiness, and operational development. His work regularly involves supporting leadership teams, boards, and senior management in navigating the practical requirements of building businesses that are not only viable, but also compliant, accountable, and positioned for long-term success. His approach combines governance discipline, financial literacy, and practical implementation planning.  

He holds a Master of Business Administration and is known for translating complex business, governance, and financial concepts into practical language that is accessible to leaders, administrators, and entrepreneurs. His experience includes working with First Nations governments, Economic Development Corporations, non-profit organizations, and private sector partners on projects that require both strategic oversight and handson operational planning.
