Description

Spill Response – Due Diligence is an applied, field-based course focusing on coastal, inland and freshwater applications and conditions and provides course participants with the skills, knowledge and abilities to confidently and effectively prevent and, if needed, respond to and manage a potential spill on a job site. 

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:   

  1. Identify sources, causes, and types of spills that can occur on a construction site. 
  2. Explain spill behaviour and impacts across receiving environments (water, land, snow, and ice), including considerations related to climate change. 
  3. Identify site practices and controls that prevent the release of fuels, chemicals, and other contaminants. 
  4. Describe spill response countermeasures, including equipment, materials application strategies, and their limitations. 
  5. Describe the required reporting and notification steps that must be followed after a spill on a job site. 

Certification

To successfully complete the Spill Response Due Diligence course, participants must attend both the classroom and field components in their entirety, and complete a multiple choice quiz that will be administered and discussed in detail collectively. 

Prerequisites

There are no formal prerequisites.  This training course involves a lot of examples and discussions from spill response incidents.  As a result, both experienced and non-experienced participants will learn from the discussions.

Who attends?

Natural Resource and Industry consultants, environmental monitors, partners, Indigenous groups, government and any personnel or organization involved in the transfer or storage of fuels and oils.

Course Format

The Spill Response Due Diligence course is available for ‘in-house’ deliveries and contract training. Client groups can choose from a one or two-day training program. The one or two-day course includes both classroom theory and field-based exercises. This course is highly customizable and can include the following classroom and field topics and training: a review of the types of assessments, legal issues, fate and effects of spilled product, fuel transportation, storage and dispensing, a review of standards for response organization and advanced site sampling, cleanup, disposal and treatment.

Lauri Solsberg, M.Eng., P.Eng.

​Environmental Engineer

​​Mr. Lauri Solsberg holds degrees in chemical and environmental engineering. He specializes in three areas of oil and chemical spill prevention and response: countermeasures recommendations, contingency planning, and training. Lauri has responded to spills, investigated various spill control technologies and methods, and prepared many manuals and guides. The development and instruction of training programs has been a key part of his work since 1980.
