Introduction to Environmental Management Plans on Construction Sites
Description
NRTG’s MicroCourses offer a flexible and practical training pathway designed to build applied skills efficiently. This MicroCourse provides a focused introduction to environmental management plans used on construction sites, helping learners understand how environmental requirements are organized, communicated, and implemented in real-world field conditions.
Participants will explore the purpose and structure of common environmental management plans, including Construction Environmental Management Plans (CEMP) and Environmental Protection Plans (EPP), along with supporting documents used to manage environmental risks on construction projects.
The course emphasizes how these plans guide day-to-day construction activities such as land clearing, excavation, water protection, waste management, and spill prevention. Learners will gain a clear understanding of how environmental requirements are translated from written documents into practical field actions.
Designed for practical application rather than technical plan development, this course helps bridge a common gap in the industry—where professionals are expected to follow environmental plans without fully understanding how they function. Participants will learn to recognize environmental risks and understand how management plans are used to reduce impacts and support compliance on active construction sites.
By the end of the course, learners will have a strong foundational understanding of how environmental management plans support safe, compliant, and environmentally responsible construction operations, while preparing them for more advanced training in plan development and implementation.
Program Outcomes
Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:
- Understand the purpose and role of environmental management plans on construction sites.
- Explain how environmental management plans guide construction activities and environmental protection measures.
- Recognize key components and information commonly included in environmental management plans.
- Identify how environmental risks are addressed through planning, mitigation, and monitoring measures.
- Interpret environmental requirements and apply them to field activities and site operations.
- Relate environmental management plans to practical, on-site actions that support compliance and environmental protection.
Instructor Profile
LeeAnn Muggeridge, R.T. Bio
Environmental Specialist

LeeAnn Muggeridge is an environmental professional with over 10 years of field-based experience supporting construction and resource development projects across western and eastern Canada. Her work has focused on environmental monitoring, water quality assessment, habitat evaluation, and fisheries studies in both freshwater and marine environments. She has worked on a wide range of projects including infrastructure developments, pipeline projects, and renewable energy initiatives such as wind energy, gaining extensive experience in active construction environments.
LeeAnn has supported environmental compliance on construction sites by conducting inspections, identifying potential environmental risks, and helping implement practical mitigation measures. Her work has required close collaboration with construction crews, contractors, and regulators to ensure environmental requirements are understood and applied in fast-paced, real-world conditions.
Throughout her career, LeeAnn has developed a strong understanding of how environmental considerations are integrated into common construction activities such as land clearing, excavation, and in-stream work. She also brings experience in technical reporting, environmental assessments, and acting as an environmental liaison to support Indigenous engagement and regulatory processes.
