Description

The Fisheries Field Skills Program (FFSP) and the Essential Fisheries Field Skills Program (EFFSP) provide participants with skills and knowledge in fish identification, fisheries field techniques, fish and fish habitat inventory and assessment, stream invertebrate sampling, streambank restoration and water quality sampling and monitoring. 

Both these programs provide course participants with high-quality, in-demand introductory field skills. through a very practical and ‘hands on’ format. Instruction is almost exclusively field-based in realistic scenarios, where course participants learn how to perform technical skills and procedures under the direction of experienced instructors and practitioners.   

Course participants typically include; current fisheries field technicians and biologists, Indigenous partners, and technicians working in other sectors. 

Program Outcomes

Graduates of these programs are capable to conduct or assist professionals conduct fish and fish habitat assessment, inventory, and water quality programs. 

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to: 

  • Conduct standard fish and fish habitat inventory and assessment procedures, including water quality sampling, fisheries field hydrology, fish population assessments, biological sampling, and fish inventory and capture methods.  
  • Participate in invertebrate sampling programs to assess stream habitat quality. 
  • Design and implement streambank restoration techniques.  

In addition, FFSP outcomes also include:   

  • Design and conduct advanced fish habitat and population assessments, including biological sampling programs, and stream invertebrate sampling programs. 
  • Isolate an instream construction project and conduct fish salvages.   
  • Conduct backpack electrofishing surveys (if added by request). 

Prerequisites

None.   
A standard one to two-day First Aid course is required as a co-requisite when working under a Electrofishing Certification and may be obtained before or after this training program. 

How do I attend?

The EFFSP and FFSP are available via contract to organizations or community groups for in-person deliveries. The course can be customized to meet the specific needs and geographical considerations of your organization. To arrange a contract delivery, please contact us.   

What should I bring or supply?

Course participants are required to provide their own lunch, appropriate clothing for the weather, and personal protective equipment: chest waders (with no leaks), wading belt, non-slip footwear, polarized glasses, and a hat with a brim (e.g., ball cap), and a waterproof field notebook.  

Course Formats

The EFFSP and FFSP are available in two formats:   

  1. A community-based, in-person instruction program delivered weekdays (Monday – Friday).  
  2. A blended online and field-based program delivered weekdays (Monday -Friday). This program version includes ‘student led’ field practicum sessions where students complete field sessions on their own, recording notes, video, images and returning to share and discuss those results with the online class.

As an example, this may include additional or advanced training relating to fish habitat restoration, planning, or mitigation, lake management, fish population estimation, streambank restoration, program management, or topics of interest to your community or organization.
