Terrestrial/Riparian Ecosystems & Invasive Plant Restoration is a four-day course that provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of the terrestrial and riparian ecosystem functions, key restoration objectives, and common approaches for restoring environments impacted by invasive plants. Through interactive instruction, case studies, and applied learning, participants will explore how these ecosystems operate across Canada and how restoration practices can support their long-term resilience.

The first day of the course introduces the functions and dynamics of terrestrial and riparian ecosystem systems, along with the principles and methods commonly used to restore them. Over the remaining days, participants will build a strong foundation in invasive plant ecology and restoration, including legal classifications, ecological impacts, and effective strategies to prevent further invasion. The course also examines mechanical, chemical, and biological control methods and guides participants in selecting appropriate techniques to manage invasive species and restore native plant communities.

Graduates of this course will develop a strong foundation and practical insight to guide their continued learning and participation in ecological restoration activities. Completing this course counts towards Habitat Restoration Technician Program (HRTP) certification once the remaining weeks are completed.

Program Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this program, you will be able to:

  1. Describe the functions of terrestrial and riparian ecosystems across Canada.
  2. Summarize key objectives of terrestrial and riparian ecosystem restoration.
  3. Define ecological and legal classifications of invasive species in Canada.
  4. Describe the ecological impacts of invasive plant species on biodiversity, resource availability, and natural control mechanisms.
  5. Compare and evaluate common mechanical, chemical, and biological control methods for invasive plant species.
  6. Identify effective strategies to prevent invasive plant spread and to restore native plant communities through natural regeneration or assisted recovery.
