Description
Implement ground-based wildlife survey methods in this three-day, overview course. You will receive live instructions and demonstrations to collaborate in student-led field exercises to conduct ground-based surveys of individuals (primarily large ungulates and carnivores of BC), interpret animal signs such as scat and tracks and measure trackways to assist in understanding behaviour. This course is a hybrid course, consisting of one-half of scientific survey and one-half of woodcraft (identifying and interpreting sign; attracting and baiting animals).
Objectives
- Identify considerations of why, when, and where to survey
- Conduct standard visual and auditory survey methods for a wide range of mammals
- Interpret basic sign of wildlife presence
- Apply block survey and transect survey methods
- Identify basic trapping methods and ethics associated with trapping
- Conduct wildlife tree and coarse woody debris surveys
- Identify and interpret evidence from carcasses

Equipment
Participants are required to bring their own equipment:
- Waterproof field notebook
- All-weather boots
- Field clothing
- Binoculars (optional but recommended)
- GPS (optional but recommended)
