Description

Expand your industry skills through this 120-hour (three-week) training program where you will acquire in-demand Environmental Monitoring field skills, including Backpack Electrofishing Certification. Upon graduation, you will be qualified for environmental monitoring and assessments directly or as an Assistant for environmental professionals and be recognized as an Applied Biology Technician by BC’s College of Applied Biology. This course is offered as a blended training program with two options: an online, instructor-led session followed by 1) an in-person field practicum or 2) a student-led practicum.

Objectives

  • Observe, record and report environmental field data
  • Conduct standard environmental assessments and inventories for: air, water, plants and trees, wildlife, fish, and soil
  • Conduct backpack electrofishing surveys as certified technicians
  • Operate, calibrate and maintain a wide variety of environmental field equipment and ‘tools’
  • Identify and classify types of vegetation, wildlife, fish and soils
  • Conduct water quality and field hydrology procedures
  • Identify and interpret environmental field conditions
  • Identify site impact, and develop and implement site rehabilitation procedures
  • Conduct erosion and sediment control measures
  • Isolate an instream construction project and conduct a fish salvage

Equipment

Participants are required to bring their own equipment:

  • Chest waders
  • Wading belt
  • Non-slip footwear
  • Polarized glasses
  • Hat with a brim (e.g., ball cap)
  • Clinometer
  • Compass
  • Waterproof field notebook
  • Eslon or other 30m measuring tape
  • Minnow trap
  • Ziplock bags
  • Meter stick (1.2m wooden doweling, marked in cm)
  • Bucket
