Format: Online and field training

Description

Implement leading practices in streambank and lakeshore restoration, soil bioengineering and erosion control. In this two-day field training course, construct, install and maintain standard and innovative streambank restoration and bioengineering structures and techniques. You will have hands-on opportunities to collect, store, maintain and transport cuttings to a field site, and manually construct/install up to 11 streambank restoration and/or soil bioengineering structures and techniques.

Objectives

  • Identify key elements of a Streambank Restoration Plan
  • Assess and analyze site conditions to choose appropriate plants and methods
  • Construct and/or install up to 11 standard and innovative Streambank Restoration techniques using plants and materials
  • Isolate a project field site and implement erosion control measures
  • Identify suitable bioengineering plant species
  • Collect, prepare and maintain plant cuttings
  • Develop and implement a site safety plan
  • Implement a long-term monitoring and maintenance program

Participants are required to bring their own equipment:

  • Field clothing
  • Rain overalls, gloves
  • Sturdy footwear
  • Sledge hammer, 2 or 5 lbs 
  • Pruners, single-hand and two-hand

Code of Conduct

The NRTG Code of Conduct sets out the standards of conduct expected of students. It requires individuals and groups to be responsible for their behaviours and liable for the consequences of their actions.

NRTG is a private training company and community of students, staff, and instructors involved in professional development and career advancement. All members of this community are expected to conduct themselves in a manner that contributes positively to an environment in which respect, civility, diversity, opportunity, and inclusiveness are valued; these principles are essential to assure the success of both the individual and the community. The NRTG Student Code of Conduct reflects a concern for these values and ensures a safe environment for everyone.

When does the code apply?

The Student Code of Conduct applies to any NRTG staff member, contractor, student, or client. This code of behaviour is to be observed during interactions between NRTG and these parties during any activities related to the services provided by NRTG.

Prohibited conduct

Prohibited conduct under the Code includes but is not limited to:

  • Assaulting, harassing, intimidating, disparaging, or threatening another individual or group
  • Endangering the health or safety of others.
  • Stealing, misusing, destroying, defacing, or damaging NRTG property or property belonging to someone else.
  • Disrupting NRTG course deliveries, services, or any business operations.
  • Using NRTG equipment, services, or computers without authorization.
  • Making false accusations against any NRTG staff member, contractor, student, or client.
  • Supplying false information to NRTG or forging, altering, or misusing any NRTG document or record.
  • Storing, possessing, or using real or replica firearms or other weapons, explosives (including fireworks), ammunition, or toxic or otherwise dangerous materials during NRTG course deliveries or business operations.
  • Using, possessing, or distributing illegal drugs.
  • Violating provincial liquor laws and policies.
  • Hazing (An initiation or behavior that involves humiliation, harassment, or abuse).
  • Encouraging, aiding, or conspiring in any prohibited conduct.
  • Failing to comply with a disciplinary measure or disciplinary measures imposed under the procedures of this Code.

Disciplinary measures

Disciplinary measures that may be imposed under the Code include, but are not limited to, the following: 

  • Verbal warning or reprimand.
  • Written warning or reprimand.
  • Issuance of an apology made publicly or privately.
  • Probation, during which certain conditions must be fulfilled and good behaviour must be demonstrated.
  • Payment of costs or compensation for any loss, damage, or injury caused by the conduct.
  • Loss of certain privileges.
  • Restriction or prohibition of access to, or use of, NRTG services or programs.
  • Fines or loss of fees.
  • Expulsion from NRTG program(s).

This description of prohibited conduct and disciplinary measures is intended to ensure safe and comfortable environments for learning and teaching by all participants in NRTG’s programs.
