Description:

The three-day Wetland Restoration Techniques provides students with knowledge of wetland ecology and the technical skills to successfully implement a wetland restoration project. This course includes live online instruction, group activities and discussions, and a final project. Students will also learn how to assess the status of wetlands, develop restoration plans, and write wetland restoration reports.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to: 

  • Describe the role of wetlands in maintaining water quality, flood control, and biodiversity.
  • Identify the principles of wetland restoration.
  • Conduct a wetland restoration plan to national standards.
  • Determine wetland status by conduct a biological, physical, and chemical assessment.
  • Develop restoration plans based on ecological value.
  • Comply with federal legislation regarding wetland restoration.
  • Develop wetland restoration reports.
  • Structure and evaluate successful wetland restoration plans.

Who attends this course?

Course participants typically include field technicians, biologists, Indigenous stakeholders, engineers, planners, and other environmental professionals. This course is also suitable for students who are interested in pursuing a career in wetland restoration or related fields.

All participants must be a minimum age of sixteen (16) at the time of registration.  

Pre-requisites:

There are no formal pre-requisites. A working knowledge of wetland ecology and hydrology is beneficial but not mandatory.

Personal Equipment Requirements:

Participants are required to supply their own computer and have a stable internet connection to access live lessons on a web-based learning platform. Writing supplies for taking notes are also recommended.

This course will be scheduled for delivery throughout the year (providing suitable weather). Instructor Profile:

Dr. Sama AlMaarofi is an ecological assessment specialist with over 20 years of experience. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Baghdad, Iraq; She obtained her Masters and PhD from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

As a designated educator, Sama has over 10 years of experience teaching environmental management and sustainability courses and 7 years of experience developing academic curriculums and technical training programs.

As an environmental consultant, Sama has 12 years of experience conducting environmental surveys for environmental bio-assessments studies.
